Think about what the letters would look like printed in solid black ink. Name a theme ("western", "sci-fi"), a shape ("tall and narrow", "round and bubbly") and one detail ("dripping ends", "little spikes", "long flourishes"). Colors, glows and shadows can't live inside a font file, so they only change the result if they suggest a shape — "fire" gives flame-like tips, "ice" gives icicles.
